We're going to be switching our dogs to a raw food diet, and I was wondering what kind of raw foods are best.|||Prey model diet. 80% raw meat, 10% raw bone, 5% live, 5% other organs. Just about any kind of meat you can find is great. You want to start with one protein source though. Most people use chicken. Feed chicken for at least a week and then begin adding new meats one at a time to the dogs' diet. I also feed green tripe, whole raw eggs, and fish oil.
Here's a great page with some basic info: http://www.rawfed.com/myths/feedraw.html
ADD: Yeah I found the tuna pretty amusing too. That isn't one I've heard before.
ADD: Firstly, if you're feeding a correctly balanced raw diet, there is no need for dog food. If you do choose to feed dog food in addition to raw, they should never be fed at the same time because kibble and raw meat digest and different rates. This could cause an upset stomach.
Secondly, chicken bones are excellent. My dogs get 95% of their bone content from chicken bones. Raw chicken bones do *not* splinter because they are soft and flexible. They're actually about the safest bones you can feed. Cooked chicken bones are another story. A dog should never be fed cooked bones of any kind.
Thirdly, your dog will not get ring worm from raw meat. That is ridiculous. There should be definitely be red meat such as steak in a raw diet and it is no more dangerous for a dog than kibble.
Eating raw meat is NOT the reason wolves live shorter lives than domestic dogs. The wolf (and the dog) is perfectly built to handle raw meat. The reason wolves don't live as long is because they live in the wild. It's not the pampered life of a house pet with regular meals every day, trips to the vet when they're sick, and balanced diets with all the needed nutrients. Wolves have to deal with weather, food shortages, and illness that domestic dogs are sheltered from.|||Google BARF for dogs.
Most meats are perfectly good, but you must feed organs (offal) and bones too.
ADD: LOL. ItsME says dogs cannot eat tuna. What utter rubbish. My dog gets a couple of tins of it a week and it does him the world of good.|||Ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha!
@ Doglover:
"No steak or any other really raw meats because they will make them get ring worm. Any raw meats can. Witch is the bad side to switching a dogs diet to raw meats. This is why wolves only live at the most 7 and a half years because the ring worms eat them alive."
Really?! Because I've HAD ringworm! I contracted it on my forearm from infected kittens I was working with at the humane society. Ringworm is a FUNGAL INFECTION, NOT an actual WORM.
Seriously. Go read a freakin' book before posting something as ignorant as that! LOL

Okay - back to the original question. Research raw prey model:

These are a wealth of information in feeding your dog a proper diet.
Any and all muscle meats, organ meats, and raw meaty bones (except for weight-bearing bones) are acceptable.
I hope this is helpful to you!|||The best source of meat price and health wise in my opinion is chicken necks/backs. They're high in calcium rich, soft, edible bone and pretty lean especially if you trim some of the fat (don't trim it all). But of course I'm sure you know about the 80/10/10 ratio for meat, organ, and bone. Make half of the organ you feed be liver (aka 5% of the total diet).
But some of the common foods I feed because of cost and high bone content are: Chicken necks and backs, chicken quarters, pig feet, pork neck, boston butt, and beef brisket. Some of the common organ I feed are: Green tripe, fresh, unbleached pork mauls, chicken liver, pork liver, beef liver, beef kidney, lamb lungs, chicken and turkey hearts and gizzards and so on. Some of the less common foods I feed that are high value nutrition wise are canned mackerel and salmon, cod liver oil, and salmon oil. I feed salmon oil every time I feed my dogs and you should too...raw food or kibble. Salmon oil is a must!|||You might search that, but here are some I know of that dogs CANNOT eat, that will make them sick.
Fruits(Apples, pears, bananas, etc)
Citrus (Lemons, limes, oranges, pineapple, grapes)
Tomatoes (Any)
Avocados(Any)
Onions(Any)
Tuna(Any)|||Well, you should still feed your dogs dog food, yet it is good to know your not beacause then you know your not feeding them poison. Well, in grocery stores like Food land, Superstore, or any other grocery store you can buy a package of 2 or 3 bones and they have a few cm of meat on them and they can snack on them for at least 3 hours. you can find them in the meat section. No chicken bones. They splinter and can kill your dogs. No steak or any other really raw meats because they will make them get ring worm. Any raw meats can. Witch is the bad side to switching a dogs diet to raw meats. This is why wolves only live at the most 7 and a half years because the ring worms eat them alive. Well, for more information ask your vet! HOPE IT HELPED!
