I have learned a lot about dog nutrition and be adviced the raw food diet isnt all that its cracked up to be... firstly there is the risk of health problems to you the handler of the raw meat.
further more it doesnt provide all the extra nutrients that good quality foods ad, even with supplimenting fruits and veges. (for example glucosamine and chondroiten wont be in the food and other beneficial things like Yucca are hard for you to get)
I do reccommend people feed a bit of rice (preferably brown) to dogs
But I would suggest selecting a good quality dog food for small breed dogs, either Lamb meal or chicken meal as first ingredient and rice as second|||Marina Zacharias (holistic practitioner) at http://www.naturalrearing.com/ will have lots of advice for you, and help on her site. You can actually call and talk to her. The contact info is at this addy. Her dad may answer. He is also very helpful as a retired vet. They have raised Basset hounds for many years. I have raised a number of litters on the raw food diet. They have been the most vigorous of all the dogs I have raised. I only wish I had the time and commitment to feed the diet to all my dogs.|||I'm glad to hear you've decided to try a raw diet for your dog. I think you'll be very pleased with the results. If your dog has been eating commercial food, you will have a "detox" period in which the body is getting rid of the nasty chemicals in dog food. Once that has passed you'll be amazed.
Don't listen the poster about the dangers of raw meat. Yes there is bacteria on raw meat that could be harmful to us. But use safe meat handling practices, and you'll be fine. You eat meat right? I doubt all of comes precooked in a pretty package.
Now to answer your question. The staple of my dogs raw diet is chicken. My dog is lab, she gets leg quarters, for your dog I'd go with wings or necks. They also need organ meat a few times a week. In a small portion as it is very rich, to much at one time can cause diarhea. I also mix things up a bit with fish, pork, etc. I also know a lot of hunters, so during hunting season I get a lot of freebies as well.
I don't use any fruit or veggies in my dogs diet. Some do some don't. I've been feeding raw for a year now without using them and my dog has never looked better.
Here's part of my dog food article, contains a bit of info on raw diet and some raw diet links. Another good source of information on raw diets can be found at http://www.livejournal.com Do a user search for "rawdogs" This group has people who have been feeding raw for years, and others just starting. They'll be happy to answer questions for you.
There is another diet option other than dog food. Some people choose to feed a raw diet. This involves feeding the dog raw meaty bones and organ meat. However it is not as simple as throwing a couple chicken bones in a bowl everyday. If you wish to feed this type of diet, do lots and lots of research first. Switching to this diet without knowing what your doing can lead to nutritional problems for your dog. I'll give you some links as a starting point in research if you are interested in this type of diet.
